Children may experience various speech and language challenges. Our therapies are designed playfully to motivate and engage children, using age-appropriate materials and activities. We focus on:
For adults, we focus on regaining or improving communication skills that may have been affected by various causes, such as neurological disorders, voice problems or hearing loss. Our approach includes:
Speech disorders include various problems a person may experience in producing speech sounds. This includes articulation disorders, where a person has difficulty forming sounds correctly. Phonological disorders are another type of speech disorder, where a person has difficulty understanding and using sound patterns, a fundamental aspect of language. Apraxia is also a speech disorder, characterised by difficulty coordinating the movements required for speech.
Language disorders involve problems with the use and understanding of language. Expressive disorders are a form of language disorder in which a person has difficulty expressing thoughts. Receptive disorders, on the other hand, refer to problems understanding what others say. Aphasia is a more specific language disorder caused by brain injury, leading to various problems with language processing.
Voice disorders are problems affecting the voice, such as hoarseness, which often involves a raspy or hoarse sound of the voice. Voice nodules are small, often painful bumps on the vocal cords that can affect voice quality. Dysphony is an umbrella term for problems with the tone, volume or quality of the voice.
Swallowing disorders, also known as dysphagia, are problems that occur during swallowing. This can include difficulties swallowing and chewing food. People with swallowing disorders are at increased risk of choking or aspiration, where food or liquids enter the airways. Changes in diet and swallowing techniques are often needed to make eating and drinking safer and more comfortable.
