For adults, we focus on regaining or improving communication skills that may have been affected by various causes, such as neurological disorders, voice problems or hearing loss. Our approach includes:
Speech challenges cover a broad spectrum of problems in producing speech sounds. This includes articulation problems, where correct pronunciation of sounds is challenging. Phonological disorders are another type of speech problem, where there are difficulties in understanding and using sound patterns, an essential aspect of language. Apraxia, characterised by difficulties in coordinating movements required for speech, also comes under speech disorders. At TinyEYE speech therapy in Zeewolde, we focus on these and other related speech problems.
Language disorders involve a variety of problems with the use and interpretation of language. Expressive language disorders, where a person struggles to express thoughts, fall under this category. Opposed to this are receptive disorders, which manifest themselves in the difficulty of understanding what others say. Aphasia, a more specified language disorder often caused by brain injury, results in various challenges with language processing.
Voice disorders are problems that affect the quality of the voice, such as hoarseness, which usually leads to a raspy or hoarse sound. Thickenings on the vocal cords, known as vocal cord nodules, which are sometimes sensitive, can also worsen voice quality. Dysphony is an umbrella term for conditions that affect the pitch, volume or overall quality of the voice.
Swallowing disorders, known as dysphagia, include problems that occur during swallowing. This can range from difficulty swallowing to problems chewing food. People with swallowing disorders are at higher risk of choking or aspiration, where food or liquids enter the airways. It is often necessary to modify eating habits and swallowing techniques to make food consumption safer and more comfortable.
